Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $999,994)

Community Change Foundation, in partnership with Navigate360 and Stand4Kind, is proposing to prevent school violence under Category 2 status within targeted school districts in Oakland County, Michigan and across Salt Lake and Utah Counties in the State of Utah through the following three initiatives: 1) developing and implementing Behavioral Threat Assessment (BTA) teams, 2) training school personnel and educating students on preventing school violence and improving school climate, and 3) providing specialized training for school resource officers (SROs) in the basics of mental health awareness, crisis intervention, and youth development. This project will further build upon existing, ongoing state-wide efforts to address the problem of school violence by enhancing prevention and intervention efforts to support students who are at risk of harming themselves and/or others.

Community Change Foundation in partnership with Navigate360 proposes to enhance the development and deployment of multidisciplinary teams by implementing the evidence-based CSTAG model through a high-quality eLearning training platform for school teams to build, strengthen, and maintain knowledge and skills in BTA and suicide prevention. They will also implement an electronic case management tool to support the effective facilitation of the CSTAG and suicide assessment methodologies.

Community Change Foundation in partnership with Stand4Kind will also train school personnel and students suicide prevention and anti-bullying curriculum utilizing a variety of programs including the evidence-based programs Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Emotional Wellness 180, as well as its peer-to-peer Project Firefly and student ambassador programs. Community Change Foundation will further enhance training efforts by providing its customized Revitalist Education Athletic Program (REAP the Zone) for student athletes (who are prone to particularly higher rates of mental health issues) and their coaches, and administrators.

Lastly, Navigate360 and Stand4Kind will work to partner with schools and law enforcement agencies to offer BTA eLearning training modules specifically for law enforcement, in addition to the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) curriculum, to help facilitate their role in improving school climate and safety.

Community Change Foundation and its partners, Navigate360 and Stand4Kind believe these enhancements will provide the tools needed by districts in Michigan and Utah to recognize, respond quickly to, and help prevent acts of violence and ensure a positive school climate.
