Episode 23: Civilian Oversight Perspective – Denver PD

Lauren Gonzalez from BJA’s Body-Worn Camera Team interviews Nicholas Mitchell, the Independent Monitor of the Denver Police and Sheriff’s Departments, to discuss the Denver Police Departments BWC Pilot Program. The discussion explores civilian oversight of policy and training around bwcs specifically during a pilot project along with lessons learned that can be used in large agency bwc implementations.

Episode 10: Technology Perspective with Oakland PD, CA

December 2015
Todd Maxwell, a contractor with Booz Allen Hamilton working with BJA's Body-Worn Camera Team, interviews Oakland Police Department's Officer Burke to get a technology perspective on BWCs from an agency that uses on-site storage, but is considering cloud storage. Officer Burke was part of the BJA Expert Panel on Body Worn Cameras that helped form the BJA National Body-Worn Camera Toolkit.

Episode 9: Union perspective with NOBLE's Commander Frank

December 2015
Carmen Facciolo, Policy Advisor for the Bureau of Justice Assistance, interviews Assistant Commanding Officer Horace Frank of the LAPD's Counterterrorism and Special Operations Bureau and member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives Commander Frank was part of the BJA Expert Panel on Body Worn Cameras that helped form the BJA National Body-Worn Camera Toolkit.

Episode 6: International Perspective with Deputy Chief Daroux and Staff Sergeant Rashid

November 2015
Pat McCreary, Associate Deputy Director for the Bureau of Justice Assistance, interviews Calgary Police Services Deputy Chief Trevor Daroux and Staff Sergeant Asif Rashid to get a Canadian perspective on BWCs that includes lessons learned on policy and procedure and challenges they have encountered. Calgary started a pilot program in 2012 and is expanding the implementation to all front line officers. When completed Calgary Police Service will have 11,000 BWCs in use making it one of the largest BWC implementations in the world. Calgary Police Services contributed content that helped form the BJA National Body-Worn Camera Toolkit.

Episode 2: Early Adopter Perceptive on BWCs from Oakland PD

Mike Roosa, Senior Policy Advisor for the Bureau of Justice Assistance, interviews Oakland Police Department Chief Sean Whent to discuss their departments implementation processes, perspectives and challenges. Oakland PD starting experimenting with BWCs in 2007 making it one of the first Major Cities to use BWCs. The chief discusses best practices and lessons learned. Chief Whent was part of the BJA Expert Panel on Body Worn Cameras that helped form the BJA National Body-Worn Camera Toolkit.

Episode 1: Research Perspective Interview with Dr. Michael White

October 2015
Mike Roosa, Senior Policy Advisor for the Bureau of Justice Assistance, interviews Arizona State University's Dr. Mike White to better understand research perspective on Body-Worn Cameras. Dr. White wrote the Police Officer Body-Worn Cameras: Assessing the Evidence report for the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) Diagnostic Center, facilitated the Body-Worn Camera Expert Panel convening in Washington, DC, and contributed to BJA's National Body-Worn Toolkit by authoring the FAQs for the toolkit with Dr. Charles Katz.

This program is for law enforcement agencies, including tribal law enforcement, seeking to pilot, establish, or enhance body-worn camera policy and implementation practices.
