Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2011, $17,690)

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems for criminal justice, including for any one or more of the following purpose areas: 1) law enforcement programs; 2) prosecution and court programs; 3) prevention and education programs; 4) corrections and community corrections programs; 5) drug treatment and enforcement programs; 6) planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and 7) crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).

The disparate jurisdictions consisting of Jamestown City and the Chautauqua County will use the FY 2011 JAG funds for purchase of equipment that will be used for crime prevention, officer safety and increase of the prosecution rates for the captured offenders in the areas where the equipment is deployed. Under the grant funds, the Jamestown New York Police Department will have the cameras mounted in patrol vehicles that will be assigned to high crime areas. The equipment will aid in the officers safety and ability to apprehend offenders involving criminal activity on public highways or anywhere the patrol vehicle may be deployed. The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department will use their mountable cameras in areas that have been know for illegal activities, such as criminal mischief's, narcotics use and sales, or any other location where the camera can be of law enforcement use.
