Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2021, $425,000)

This project, "Using Contraband Cellphones to Protect the Public and Stop Crime in South Carolina," will improve public and South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) safety by creating a Digital Forensics Laboratory that will test, implement, document, and share the results of high-volume processing of confiscated cellphones  and  produce forensically sound and legally sufficient digital forensic examinations. In this way, SCDC will use confiscated contraband cellphones to prevent, interrupt, document, and prosecute criminal activity coordinated by incarcerated people.
