Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2021, $250,000)
Unsubstantiated sexual abuse allegations in prisons are the most common findings for allegations of sexual assault in the Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC). To address this problem, MDOC seeks to maximize usable evidence that can be created or collected through two initiatives: 1) expanding the body-worn camera program and 2) certifying all criminal investigators as crime scene investigators through the International Crime Scene Investigators Association. Improving evidence collection methods will help supplement potential evidence collected from a Sexual Assault Forensic Exam from the hospital and create a collection of physical evidence that provides for a much higher chance of successful prosecution.
