Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2021, $1,199,238)
ITO proposes a Day Treatment Center to provide comprehensive integrated services to our clients with mental health or substance use disorders who have been involved in the justice system, or at-risk to be involved with the justice system. The Day Center will help address issues such as, but not limited to, transportation, multiple weekly appointments, a safe space to provide holistic healing, while incorporating daily life skills and creating a recovery community that provides culturally competent care. Stigma continues to be a barrier for treatment, which has been expressed through our consortium meetings, relationships with public schools, tribal community, law enforcement, court systems, and discussions with other ITO departments. This project will allow treatment, recovery, and basic life skills to be provided in a location that is easy to access, however out of the heart of the small town that ITO Behavioral Health currently resides.
ITO PFC-BH would like to place a manufactured modular building to be operated as a Day Center on 10 acres of land owned by the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma located approximately half mile from the center of Perkins, Oklahoma, but close enough for individuals to walk, ride a bike, or bus to location. ITO PFC-BH plan for permanent modular building (approximately 3,500 square feet) is to build a program encompassing community-based, experiential treatment interventions for at-risk and delinquent youth, or other individuals who are involved with the justice system, or at-risk of being involved with justice system, designed to reduce recidivism and be cost effective. The Day Center and programs offered will lower the likelihood of youth being arrested, adjudicated, convicted, or reduce subsequent commitment for any offense within 12 months of release by providing a centralized location for youth or other at-risk individuals to meet with mental health professionals, attend group meetings, attend virtual meetings, family counseling, and trainings.
The Day Center service delivery is targeted at eight integrated components: education, challenge experiences, cognitive-behavioral therapy, strengths-based case management, behavior modification, family partnership, problem-solving and social skills development, and community service which has shown to effectively reduce juvenile delinquency.
