Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2021, $146,010)

This proposal is requesting federal funding support to implement an automatic license plate reader (ALPR) program in the City of Española with the primary short-term objective to reduce the number of motor vehicle thefts and increase the number of recovered stolen motor vehicles with the goal of reducing the alarmingly high violent crime rate throughout the city and surrounding areas. The city will work with a vendor to install 9 cameras initially to pilot the program with plans to install up to 20 cameras at all the egress/ingress points and will hire one full-time crime analyst to oversee the program and ensure the department reaps the maximum benefits of obtaining this technology.
