Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2021, $400,000)
The City of Coral Gables (City) is seeking to implement a Body-Worn Camera (BWC) Program to be utilized by sworn police personnel that serve the community at large, to include the University of Miami campus located within the City of Coral Gables boundaries. The City has experienced an increased number of calls for service over the past several years, essentially increasing the amount of police and citizen interactions. These increased contacts lead to a greater likelihood that an encounter may yield an arrest, a complaint against an officer, or a use of force situation. Video documentation is vital to improving evidence collection, strengthening officer performance and accountability, enhancing agency transparency, documenting encounters between police and the public, and investigating and resolving complaints and officer- involved incidents. The City of Coral Gables is hoping to receive funding support from the Bureau of Justice Assistance via the Body-Worn Camera Policy and Implementation Program to provide body-worn cameras and all related training to 200 sworn police personnel as well as the necessary staffing to support the program.
