Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $250,000)

Autism Society of America, Nassau Suffolk Chapter (NSASA) will improve the functioning of the criminal justice system by improving the provision of responsive law enforcement services for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families.  Starting October 1, 2022, through September 14, 2023, NSASA will conduct first responder training events throughout New York State, with the intent that participants will increase their knowledge of methods to have more successful outcomes in interactions with individuals with intellectual disabilities.  It is anticipated that at least 1,000 first responders will receive this training through the proposed project.
