Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $1,342,000)

The GOAL of LPD Lansing Crisis Assessment Team (LCAT) will be to maintain community stability while averting future crises, connecting citizens to available resources, and diverting people out of the criminal justice system.

The (LCAT) would expand the reach of LPD's current Social Workers by providing rapid mobile response with face-to-face engagements and service.  LCAT would allow us to engage with hundreds of citizens that would have otherwise had unmet needs.  Community providers see the effectiveness of LPD social workers and welcome an expanded team.

LCAT will require: 3 vehicles, 3 Community Police Officers, and 1 additional Social Worker. All will be trained in de-escalation, trauma, and crisis intervention, and be in soft uniforms.  LCAT will respond to crises as they are unfolding for Lansing citizens. Those who simply need help will not interface with the criminal justice system but will get needed support.

NOTE:  LPD was recently able to hire two social workers, allowing us to reduce the number of social workers requested under this project.
