Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $150,000)

The Maryland State Police serves to protect the citizens of Maryland and those who visit by providing a visible police presence on highways and in communites. On a daily basis, troopers are dispatched to collision scenes and other calls for service; many, involving injuries resulting in significant blood loss to the victim(s). Additionally, incidences of mass shootings and terrosist attacks utilizing improvised explosive devices are becoming more prevalent. As the result, there has been an increase in deaths resulting from significant blood loss. It is the duty of first responders to render the necessary aid to immediately stabilize an injured person during transport to a trauma facility or until the assistance of more qualified personnel becomes available. To better serve the injured immediately following a disaster of any type we must equip our law enforcement officers and other first responders with the most state of the art life saving training and equipment to render immediate aid to those injured; specifically, from injuries resulting in significant blood loss. Rendering timely care to the injured is essential to saving lives and the ability to stop uncontrolled bleeding is performed more expeditiously with hemostatic gauze as it promotes clotting at a faster rate than standard gauze. Funding will allow the MDSP to purchase Stop the Bleed equipment for personnel to use across Maryland.
