Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $2,300,000)

This opportunity would allow Louisiana State Police (LSP) to  initiate and host the first Law Enforcement Symposium, focusing on De-Escalation, Use of Force Tactics, Less Lethal Weapons Uses, and Advanced Scenario Training.  LSP will utilize experts in the field for discussion and invite vendors to demonstrate the most up-to-date less lethal equipment and training aids on the market.  These symposiums will be in conjunction with the purchase and deployment of  Virtual Reality Scenario-Based training platforms.

The goal is to create a training and awareness program for law enforcement leaders across the state that gives access to the most up-to-date training aids available.  Eventually this program could provide valuable scenario-based training to agencies that would not typically be able to afford such training.  Our number one goal is to decrease instances in which lethal force is used, while providing officers with the training they need to keep themselves, and members of the public, safe and free from unnecessary harm.

The Joint Emergency Services Training Center (JESTC) in Zachary, Louisiana is an LSP property, which has the necessary infrastructure in place to support this training initiative and the first phase of the Symposiums.  This location will be the host site to many law enforcement agencies from around the country who may not have the expertise within their ranks to conduct such training or the budget to purchase the state-of-the-art equipment and virtual reality technology that will be available to them at the LSP training center.
