Goals of the Project: To award “Student Loan” benefits to eligible prosecutor and public defenders to both attract and retain prosecutors and public defenders to the State of South Carolina.
Description of the Strategy: “Program Structure”
Allocation of program funds is equally distributed between prosecutors and public defenders.
The amount of funding for the state will be allocated according to the number of prosecutors and public defenders.
The SCCPC will design Outreach Plans (electronic, print, and word of mouth) for prosecutors and public defenders.
Individual prosecutors and public defenders will apply directly to SCCPC seeking benefits under the program.
Benefits to individual applicants will be awarded based on a formula that ranks each applicant according to the applicant’s “ability to pay” his/her student loans based upon and income to outstanding loan(s) ratio. This formula will also account for dependents and Adjusted Gross Income.
Quarterly Financial Status reports and quarterly performance metrics reports and semi-annual reports will be submitted.
There are, including those who work both full-time and part-time, approximately 400 full-time prosecutors, approximately 270 public defenders, and approximately 13 full-time federal public defenders.
