Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $794,589)

The PPD-LSB’s Forensic Biology (FB) Section, which includes the Forensic DNA and Evidence Screening Sections, is responsible for the DNA analysis of biological evidence. The purpose of this project is to improve forensic DNA operations by increasing the analytical capacity and decreasing the number of backlogged cases in service to the citizens of Phoenix.  

 

The FY 2022 DNA Capacity Enhancement and Backlog Reduction (CEBR) Program funds will be used for the following goals:

 

Increase the number of eligible CODIS samples developed by providing overtime for PPD-LSB scientists to process 30 screening and 30 DNA backlogged cases on overtime and to outsource 390 forensic biology cases.  
Increase the capacity of the PPD-LSB Forensic Biology Section by implementing a software interpretation application and alternative light source equipment for the detection of possible biological fluids suitable for DNA analysis.  
Provide continuing education training to 33 scientists in the FB Section.
