Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2022, $249,998)

The Greensboro Police Department has created a behavioral health response team to respond to incidents involving people enduring mental health crises. This program involves 6 officers who have been trained to handle the complexities invariably involved in this type of response. Although the program is still in its infancy, it shows signs of success. We intend to extend this training to all officers in the department and incorporate it in our training academy so that it becomes a part of our culture. We are applying for these funds to bring that plan to fruition through "train the trainer" programs. Additionally, we will partner with a local university research department to track results and utilize their finding to make adjustments to the program as needed.
