Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $703,000)

The Madera County Sheriff’s Office proposes to implement Madera County Sheriff's Office Rapid DNA System Project. The purpose is to make Rapid DNA Systems available to surrounding agencies when the need arises, including local police departments and neighboring county sheriff departments.  Project activities include establishing a Rapid DNA program, that will vastly improve public safety.   The instrument allows deputies to process DNA samples in 90 minutes with minimal training.   These samples can generate investigative leads in 90 minutes as opposed to many months it can take in the crime lab.   Expected outcomes include reduction of the current backlog for DNA data, create investigative leads, save time and resources, catch more criminals, and improve the community we serve.   In addition to apprehending suspects sooner, those falsely accused will be exonerated.
