Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $670,000)
The State of Delaware proposes to purchase instrumentation and equipment to enhance forensic testing and death investigation capabilities for the criminal justice community and the citizens of Delaware. Project activities include the purchase of a Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS) to reduce turnaround in the Fire Debris Section of the Forensic Chemistry Unit; purchase of a Liquid Chromatograph-tandem Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS/MS) to increase sensitivity of THC testing and enhanced capacity of cannabinol identification within the Toxicology Unit; and purchase of specimen refrigerators to properly store biological specimens within the Medical Examiner Unit for toxicological testing.
Expected outcomes include reduced turnaround time for testing of samples within the Forensic Chemistry Unit, increased sensitivity of THC testing and ability to identify cannabinols within the Toxicology Unit, and enhanced storage of biological materials in the Medical Examiner Unit.
The intended beneficiaries of the project are: members of the criminal justice community through greater efficiency and capacity in testing samples and citizens of Delaware by providing timely cause and manner of death of loved ones.
