Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $1,000,000)

The Detroit Police Department (DPD) is requesting funding to support its initiative to fully upgrade its existing Body Worn Camera (BWC) Program. These next-generation model BWCs have improved technology to document evidence, prevent and resolve complaints brought by members of the public, and strengthen DPD’s transparency and accountability. BWCs have become indispensable to DPD’s members in documenting contacts, conversations, critical incidents and emergencies.  Funds from this opportunity will also be used to increase DPD’s video data storage capacity through increasing the number of upgraded software user licenses by 80 and the addition of smart holster sensors. The new technology will also include trigger sensors, which attach to a gun holster and detect when a firearm is removed, which then sends a signal for the BWC to begin recording.
