Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $2,090,000)
Hennepin Technical College proposes to implement the Hennepin Technical College Procurement of Scenario-Based Training Equipment project. The purpose is to purchase technologically-advanced equipment capable of maximizing curriculum value through the use of real-time, scenario-based instructional review in Minnesota Congressional District 3 (Brooklyn Park, MN) and Congressional District 7 (Alexandria, MN).
Project activities include the purchasing of equipment and supplies to facilitate the academic instruction combined with a high degree of hands-on training essential to develop appropriate skills including cultural competence and de-escalation. New technologies are needed to train and re-orientate peace officers of the future. Updated equipment will allow classroom learning to be applied in real-life settings by simulation, actors, communication systems, patrol vehicles, on-board computers, radios, and a variety of other tools most commonly associated with varied levels of force compliance.
Expected outcomes include a substantial upgrade to the current training equipment and the addition of the most current law enforcement equipment. This project will allow the pre-service training of culturally competent entry-level peace officers capable of properly handling situations of various stress and threat levels through the use of intentional, real-life, scenario-based training. The intended beneficiaries of these improvements are an estimated 300 graduates annually and the continuous education (through in-service training for experienced peace officers with the focus of being culturally competent in a variety of intentional, real-life scenarios) of an additional 2,000 attendees annually.
