Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $486,000)
Nevada - Elko County Sheriff's Office requested $486,000 for a Rapid DNA Instrument plus supplies. This technology has been developed and approved under FBI guidance to process DNA within 90 minutes. Law enforcement agencies across the country have started using Rapid DNA to make quick and accurate identifications improving public safety efficiency. It improves the ability to cooperate in the national network, such as CODIS, to alleviate the burden of the state crime lab, and to identify the remains of disaster victims.
Elko County intents to use the Rapid DNA Instrument as a tool to participate nationally, alleviate some of the burden to the state crime lab, and identify remains of disaster and unidentified crime victims. They will spearhead this work as a pilot program, looping in county and municipal law enforcement agencies sharing their results, including positive outcomes, barriers, and lessons learned. They will use the lessons learned, along side new legislative development to expand the program and partner with fellow law enforcement agencies.
