Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $83,000)

The Town of Marion Police Department in conjunction with the Southwest Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy is requesting funds for an unprecedented training event that would span the entire region of Southwest Virginia.  This funding would make available premier police leadership and management training in close proximity to over 50 Law Enforcement agencies with an option for other agencies across the United States to participate.

The grant recipient plans to bring the “Organizational Management Certificate Program” from the Southern Police Institute to an area that would not otherwise have the funding to conduct such training.  Based out of the University of Louisville the Southern Police Institute has been providing high level training across the nation since 1951.  The OMCP consists of 4 separate courses offered in 40 hour blocks that results in the completion of a college based certificate program.  The components of the program consist of instruction in performance management from budgeting to operations, organizational leadership & problem solving, personnel development, assessment & liability, and strategic management for 21st century policing.

The funds requested would pay for 25 seats in each of the 4 courses offered. These 25 seats would be offered at no cost to agencies represented within the Southwest Virginia region. Any remaining seats would be open for any other agency in the United States to attend based on the cost set by the Southern Police Institute which is $850.00 per student.     In order to provide ample space for instruction we would partner with Delta Marriott in Bristol, VA to use their conference center at a rate of $150.00 per day.
