Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $168,980)
The Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections proposes to provide residential substance use disorder treatment services for up to (25 or more) inmates annually, to residential treatment to adult population and juvenile population during detention or incarceration, prepare them for reintegration into the community by incorporating reentry planning activities into their treatment programs and assist them and their communities throughout the reentry process by delivering community-based treatment and broad-based treatment aftercare services. To provide residential treatment facilities set apart in a separate facility.
The purpose is ensured that individuals who participate in the treatment program will be provide with aftercare when they leave incarceration, and best practices community-based re-entry program for individuals incarcerated in Bureau of Corrections; activities to include evidence-based risk and need screening and assessments tools, coordination of the correctional facility treatment with other human service, rehabilitation programs, coordination with federal assistance for substance abuse treatment and aftercare services provided by the Department of Health; to include the Substance Abuse and Mental Health divisions and the Department of Human Services, and designating community-based, peer-groups and faith-based organizations to provide post-release care coordination.
Expected outcomes include the development of a multi-disciplinary team to address the re-entry needs of individuals exiting the VI Bureau of Corrections; provision of evidence-based services; reduction in recidivism in the Bureau of corrections, reduction in crime in community, parole supervision programs and regular program assessments, to include vocational skills training, job preparation, or job training programs, career exploration and planning, and skill-building services, including apprenticeships and occupational training.
