Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $1,225,000)

The Iowa Department of Public Safety, Iowa’s largest law enforcement agency, is respectfully
requesting funds from the BJA FY 2023 Body-worn Camera Policy and Implementation Program to
support a new BWC implementation. If approved, the funding would be utilized to outfit 650 sworn
officers with BWCs. The project aims to utilize BWCs across all five division of the department with
the goal of increasing the safety and accountability of officers, reducing and resolving false
allegations, increasing public trust, and improving the quality of evidence. As part of this project, the
department plans to implement a new digital evidence platform that will include the management of all
in-car and body-worn cameras. The goal is to streamline the department’s ability to share video
evidence with all relevant criminal justice stakeholders and to create detailed digital records
documenting the transmittal of evidence to all relevant parties as required by the Constitution and the
rules of criminal procedure.
