Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $42,160)

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office proposes to implement the BWCPIP. The purpose is to better
document statements, observations, behaviors, and other evidence; and to deter unprofessional, illegal,
and inappropriate behaviors by both law enforcement and the public in Washington County. Project
activities include establishing a relationship with the public through community outreach by attending
local town and city public meetings to provide education and seek feedback on the community’s needs
and concerns regarding BWCs; developing and implementing a mandatory deputy and investigator
training platform prior to issuance of cameras; abide by the Freedom of Information Act and
Washington County Sheriff’s Office’s legal responsibility pertaining to storage, retention, redaction
and deletion of digital evidence media. Expected outcomes include increased public confidence in
policing for Washington County residents, reduction in the number of complaints of misconduct or
abuse, increased transparency and accountability of Washington County deputies, reduced criminal
justice costs due to an increase of early guilty pleas, and reduction in the number of assaults on
deputies in Washington County.
