Hamden Connecticut is a town in New Haven County, with a population of
approximately 60,960 residents. The Town of Hamden has a total area of 33.3 square
miles of which, 32.8 square miles of it is land and 0.5 is water. The town has 9
Elementary Schools, 1 Middle School, 3 Magnet Schools, 2 High Schools, (Eli Whitney
Technical School & Hamden High School with an enrollment of 2,200 students.)
Hamden is also home to several private and parochial schools (7), and Quinnipiac University, which has an enrollment of approximately 8,000 students. Southern Connecticut State University is also located on the New Haven/Hamden town-line with several dorms and student housing located in Hamden.
To meet the needs of public safety within the 33 square miles of the town, the Hamden Police Department (HPD) has 103 sworn officers and 49 non-sworn personnel engaging in all aspects of 21st century policing. The (HPD) has 1 officer assigned to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Task Force and 1 Detective assigned to the New Haven Shooting Task Force.
The Town of Hamden demographics are as follows: Of the approximately 60,960 residents, 45.1% are male and 54.9 % are female; median age is 37.5 years old; 65.4 % are white, 18.8 % are black or African American, 8.8 % are Hispanic or Latino, 5 % are Asian, and 2 % other; median income for full-time, year round workers is $61,512 for males, and $52,645 for females; Education attainment is 21.9% Graduate or professional degree, 23% Bachelor’s degree, 23.5 % have some college or Associates degree, 24.9 % High school graduate or equivalent, and 6.6% have less than high school graduate.
The Hamden Police Department has proposed to purchase a CDR 900 Upgrade Kit (includes
module and cables), StarChase Guardian HX & VX Systems (includes installation, training and
accessories), Stop Sticks, Barracuda, Piranha (includes bags), and Traffic calming equipment and
supplies.
