FY23 JAG Program Project

The Somerset County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) proposes to implement the use of hand-held narcotics screeners. The purpose is to increase levels of safety and efficiency in identifying illegal drugs in the field throughout Somerset County. Project activities include purchasing three hand-held narcotics units, distributing them to our three patrol sergeants, and training each sergeant on its use. Expected outcomes include improved ability to screen illegal drugs in the field, no destruction of the drug sample, eliminating mistakes in test results, and improved safety of deputies and K9s from the risk of dangerous exposure to illegal drugs. SCSO deputies, K9s, and individuals on scene are the intended beneficiaries of this project by increased safety from exposure to illegal drugs. The accuracy of the test results also benefits criminal prosecution.
