City of Woonsocket 2023 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant

The CITY OF WOONSOCKET will use JAG funds for several initiatives to significantly enhance our ability to provide public safety and/or improve the quality of life in our city, and to acquire vital officer safety equipment through the following programs: Bicycle patrols throughout the city, with special interest in city parks and recreational areas; Violent crime patrol in unmarked cars, proactive patrol designed to prevent violent crime and gather intelligence on perpetrators; Support the Police Explorers Program with the purchase of uniforms and equipment. This program brings police officers and young people between the ages 14-20 together to train in policing; Establish a Citizens Police Academy to educate the public on policing and to create lasting, positive relationships; Establish a self-defense course for women in partnership with a local self-defense instructor; Purchase ballistic shields, capable of withstanding rifle rounds; and Engage in a vibrant recruitment campaign, with recruiting videos, improved advertisement, and public recruiting events.
