Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $61,137)

The Roanoke Police Department currently lacks budgetary funding to support its transition from the Glock .40 caliber pistol to the Glock 9mm pistol.  The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office currently lacks funding to support its technology system upgrades project and its mobile incident response trailer.

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program FY 2023 Local Solicitation will give the Roanoke Police Department the financial resources it needs to purchase a good portion of the 222 pistols needed to outfit the entire department.  Twenty six of the 222 pistols will be assigned to the department’s Tactical Response Team which will require additional accessories to be purchased.  The funding will provide the Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office the financial resources it needs to upgrade technology equipment in the Roanoke City Jail.  The equipment will include additional surveillance cameras, control panels, and intercom systems.  The funds will also provide the financial resources to outfit the Sheriff Office’s incident response trailer with the equipment necessary to maintain constant readiness.  The equipment will include storage cabinets, desktop surfaces, lighting, computer monitors, radio charging stations, and environmental controls.

The requested amount of $61,137 will provide funds to support the purchase of 48 pistols to include optics and holsters for the department’s Tactical Response Team.  The purchase of the pistols will provide better equipment for the officers of the Roanoke Police Department, protecting not only our officers, but also the citizens who live in the communities in which they work.  The Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office will use the grant funding to support technology upgrades in the Roanoke City Jail and the outfitting of the mobile incident response trailer.
