Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $154,532)
Under this grant initiative, the Chesapeake Police Department will fund a number of projects that are critical to the ongoing objective of delivering quality law enforcement services to the citizens of Chesapeake. These projects are included in all three Bureaus of the Department including Operations, Investigations and Support and include neccessary software license upgrades for important technical operations of evidence and FOIA requests as well as critical investigative software that enables the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Unit to conduct intricate and difficult criminal investigations. They also include more tactical initiatives such as replacing two retiring K9 Units which play an intrigal part of both officer safety and a productive part in removing both drugs and illegal guns from the streets. Finally, any police department operates at an optimal level with better trained officers; one request under this initiative is for funds that will allow for more training opportunities for officers to attend that will advance their knowledge on a variety of topics including community policing, crisis intervention techniques, anti-gang strategies and other topics related to issues facing the Department.
