Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $90,061)
The project goals are to use grant funding to support prosecutors and public defenders by reducing student loan obligations, thereby reducing the financial deterrence to a commitment to public service in such employment with a state, local, tribal, or Federal (P.D. only) agency. Nevada’s strategy is to: perform an outreach to all Prosecutor and Public Defender offices in Nevada to encourage those with outstanding law school student loans apply; maintain a user-friendly application and review process for public defenders and prosecutors in Nevada who have outstanding qualified student loans; streamline the review and grant process to reduce administrative costs; expedite repayment funds to the beneficiaries of the JRJ Grant in Nevada, specifically to those applicants that are least able to repay their loans and taking into consideration whether the applicant is employed in a rural or urban area in Nevada; and encourage more individuals to consider the public service of prosecution or public defense by assisting with monthly student loan obligations through the grant.
