Like other major cities, Boston is home to roughly
695,000 people and contains a sizeable population of
individuals with mental illness (MI) and co-occurring
mental illness and substance abuse (CMISA). In 2022,
the Boston Police Department (BPD) received 4,039
calls for service coded as emotionally disturbed
persons (EDP), the code for mental health-related calls
throughout the city.
The City of Boston will expand their existing locative technology program. Funds will be used to provide
lifetime SafetyNet service (radio frequency tracking)
to 275 families of individuals who have a tendency to
wander due to dementia or developmental disabilities.
An additional 50 families would receive emergency
ID bracelets.
