Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $149,667)

The Burlington County Sheriff's Department (BCSD) has partnered with local police departments in several townships in Burlington County, New Jersey, to provide immediate response to individuals with cognitive disorders who wander away from home and become lost. The program, Project Lifesaver, uses a tracking system that involves individuals wearing a small radio transmitter on their wrist or ankle. Trained search and rescue teams or local police agencies use specialized equipment to track the frequency emitted by the transmitter and locate the missing person. However, the program has some technological disadvantages, including the limited range of the signal and the lack of real-time location updates. To address these limitations, the BCSD will utilize this award to acquire AngelSense, a GPS tracking and monitoring device designed specifically for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.
