Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $55,000)

The rural town of Calera, Oklahoma, sits just 10 miles north of the Red River border with north Texas. The approximate population of Calera is 2,815, and it encompasses 4.90 square miles. Although the town of Calera may be small, within its jurisdiction is an important thoroughfare, U.S. Highway 75, which spans from Dallas, Texas to Noyes, Minnesota. This highway sees thousands of travelers, both local and out-of-state daily. The availability of this major highway and the proximity of a bordering state can make it easy for a suspect to flee from a domestic violence and/or sexual assault incident. Having the ability to accurately track the whereabouts and habits of a suspect can mean the difference between life and death in certain situations. Calera Police Department (CPD) would like to preserve the beauty of its small-town atmosphere but also make a statement that domestic violence nor sexual assault are tolerated within its boundaries. Having access to more advanced tracking equipment will make it easier for CPD officers to collect pertinent evidence, research lesser-known leads on possible suspects, and keep the residents of Calera safe and protected from violent offenders. Having access to upgraded technology in Calera will add greatly to both the protection of officers and citizens as well as bring CPD a new tool that will bring them into the new age of law enforcement. One of the most common barriers in domestic violence or sexual assault situations is a lack of knowledge of the local resources available to victims. CPD will work with local and regional service providers and other organizations to ensure that they are aware of the proposed project and are willing to stand on the front lines to protect victims and their families from further abuse.
