Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $300,000)

The Clare County Prosecutor’s Office is a small and understaffed office led by a lead prosecutor and three attorneys who all manage large caseloads. The elected prosecutor carries a full caseload in addition to the administrative duties required of the office. Available statistics large caseloads result in less than favorable outcomes on violent crime cases. The prosecutor’s office desperately needs a criminologist to assist with tracking, analyzing, and collaborating with research partners to reduce violent crime in the county and to assist with elevating technical tools to streamline data management. With the assistance of this grant, the county intends to hire a criminologist. It is expected that the criminal analyst to be able to enhance and gather data from various agency databases to assist the county in utilizing the available data that the databases contain but that are not being used to their optimum potential. The county also plans to partner with the Central Michigan University Medical School to interpret data and provide viable solutions to violent crime reduction.
