Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $300,000)

The East Orange Police Department (EOPD) proposes to implement the East Orange Prevention-Focused Community Engagement Program. The overall goal of this project seeks to develop a comprehensive, evidence-based crime reduction strategy that will not only reduce violent crime within East Orange but also hold officers accountable for policing in a fair, impartial, constitutional manner, with a goal of being effective and building trust and stronger relationships with our community. Project activities include hosting a series of community outreach events targeting specific geographic areas of the city that account for a disproportionate number of major crimes. Collectively, these efforts will advance the department’s goal to create more opportunities for officers and community members to engage in positive ways, ultimately providing greater transparency for the community and increasing public perception of the EOPD.
