Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $1,400,000)

In response to documented community threats of (1) assaults and sexual assaults, domestic violence, child and elder abuse, and other disturbance calls; (2) controlled substance misuses, as well as opioid and other illicit substances production, distribution, and use; (3) burglaries, thefts, and trespasses; and (4) missing and murdered indigenous people, human trafficking, and sextortion, Chickaloon Village Traditional Council’s Justice Department is proposing to renovate and expand the existing Justice Department building to add an additional 3,000 square feet of space to house the growing staff of Chickaloon Village Traditional Council tribal police officers and traditional tribal court staff and department operations. Tribal police officers will provide community policing needs, provide a proactive crime prevention presence, and enhance community collaborations with local, state, and federal agencies to create safer communities within Chickaloon’s documented jurisdiction. Traditional tribal court staff will hear civil and criminal cases pertaining to Violence Against Women Act Reauthorization Act of 2022 cases impacting Chickaloon Native Village Tribal citizens.
