Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2023, $149,831)

The Northern Cheyenne Tribe (NCT) is applying for a comprehensive, systemwide justice system strategic plan project. As such, the crime and public safety problems plaguing the Northern Cheyenne Reservation (NCR), whether detailed in the Tribal Community and Justice Profile or presented outside of that document, are all relevant to the proposed grant funding under Purpose Area 2. We will identify the major problems that we plan to address by developing a coordinated strategic plan that can inform the development of programming for our key stakeholders for years to come beyond the period of federal funding. We will develop a list of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) that will inform the needs and strategies that will serve to strengthen our tribal justice systems to ensure our tribal membership are provided with comprehensive justice services. The different components of the tribal justice system from investigation through conviction to corrections all attempt to work together to effect justice. However, due to the lack of a coordinated effort to develop a plan that will inform the services provided throughout the justice system, there is room for significant improvement in services. The act of gathering all the key stakeholders in the development of this coordinated plan will inevitably improve the flow of justice throughout our entire system.
