The recipient will use the EFLEA funds to address the shooting spree that occurred in Nashville, TN on March 27, 2023, at approximately 10:10 AM CST.  On that date, members of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) were dispatched to a shooting, which led to numerous calls throughout the city. MNPD officers promptly arrived at the scene upon receiving the distress calls, effectively minimizing the immediate threat posed by the shooter and preventing further loss of life. MNPD officers and first responders displayed tremendous bravery and professionalism, ensuring the safe evacuation of endangered individuals, and prioritizing the well-being of the victims and community over their own personal safety throughout the entire operation.  The incident results:  6 victims were murdered, and additional victims were targeted during the crime spree.

The active shooter incident precipitated events intensely affecting the community in general and specifically the MNPD, including the initial response and resolution, evacuation of endangered individuals, search of the scenes to render safe for additional investigation and evidence collection, crime scene security, crime scene investigation, evidence collection, traffic enforcement associated with the crime scene, and the need for site security.  In addition to the primary response and investigative activities, the MNPD had to address various ancillary needs arising from the incident. These include traffic enforcement associated with the crime scene, the implementation of heightened site security measures, ensure no potential copycat incidents or related threats, the provision of ongoing support to affected individuals and their families, and maintaining staff to respond to emergencies and calls for service in the city required reassigning officers and filling positions by staff on overtime as well as utilizing resources from state and federal agencies.
