Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $963,000)

The Allentown Police Department is proposing to implement a number of safety and investigative technologies into routine patrol activities as well as during critical incident responses. The purpose of this technology encompasses a number of functions, to include increasing officer safety, enhancing investigative capabilities, and improving crime prevention strategies within the city of Allentown. The project would include the Keystone Opportunity Zone in the city, which are areas identified by the state in need of assistance due to abandoned, unused, or underutilized land in need of revitalization. The activities involved with this technology would include the installation of a drug processing workstation, the installation of traffic signal preemption technology, five new patrol vehicles, purchasing needed crime scene documentation and evidence collection equipment, as well as traffic safety and reconstruction technologies. With the addition of the listed equipment, officers will be able to process and dispose of harmful drug material in a safe environment. New investigation equipment will allow investigating officers to process crime scenes more thoroughly, allowing for improved evidence collection and scene preservation. Outcomes resulting from these technologies and equipment include: less officer injury reports, an increase in road safety, and improved case outcomes due to enhanced investigative abilities.
