Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $700,000)
The Crisis Intervention Team, (CIT) program, a collaborative initiative, pairs specially trained law enforcement officers with licensed mental health professionals to respond to situations involving individuals in mental health crises. The officers receive extensive training in de-escalation techniques, while the mental health professionals bring a deep understanding of psychological issues and crisis intervention strategies. This dual approach ensures a comprehensive response, prioritizing safety, care, and appropriate resolution of crisis situations.
The urgent need for enhanced CIT resources in Montgomery County is underscored by the dramatic rise in mental health-related calls. From 3,089 calls in 2019 to 8,458 in 2022, representing a 173.8% increase, the surge in demand highlights the critical necessity for a robust and well-funded CIT program. Adequate funding will enable the Montgomery County Department of Police to expand its CIT Unit, ensuring prompt and effective responses to mental health crises, reducing the potential for unnecessary arrests, and preventing tragic outcomes.
The benefits of this funding are manyfold. Individuals experiencing mental health crises will receive immediate, appropriate support, potentially averting catastrophic incidents. Law enforcement officers, equipped with specialized training and resources, will handle these situations more effectively and safely, minimizing risks to all involved. The community at large will benefit from reduced crime rates, fewer unnecessary arrests, and an overall safer environment.
Moreover, the funding will facilitate the development and implementation of innovative strategies to meet the growing demand for mental health services. By integrating CITs into the community, the Montgomery County Department of Police aims to build stronger relationships between law enforcement and mental health services, fostering trust and collaboration. This holistic approach promotes mental health equity and ensures that support is accessible to all community members, including historically underserved populations.
The CDS funding will significantly bolster the Montgomery County Department of Police CIT program, enhancing its capacity to address the mental health needs of the community effectively. This investment not only improves immediate crisis responses but also contributes to long-term community safety and well-being.
