Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $2,307,000)

The Navajo County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) has taken a proactive approach to bridging gaps and expanding public safety communication abilities throughout the county. The NCSO has worked diligently on planning and developing a regional communications system that integrates law enforcement and other first responder agencies together within the region and throughout the State of Arizona. The system is designed to link federal, state, county, municipal, and tribal agencies together. This funding will further enhance and expand the regional interoperability communications system via the following activities: (1) Harris Mobile and Portable Radios: this will standardize the mobile and portable radios that personnel use. NCSO is transitioning to FirstNet, as well as, the other public safety agencies in and around the county; (2) Radio Tower Equipment: the NCSO is currently operating with five radio tower sites that are spread across the county. The county is currently in the process of adding three additional sites by June 2023. The additional eight sites being requested will completely cover the county will little to no gaps in traditional radio coverage; (3) FirstNet Mini Compact Rapid Deployable (CRD) Cell Towers: the FirstNet Mini CRD+Satellite Broadband can be quickly deployed on any Sheriff’s vehicle and taken to a scene in a remote area of the county to provide a cellular signal. This device will work with satellite backhaul and will allow incident command posts and all employees working the incident to have wireless communications and mobile services; and (4) ESRI and ArcGIS: the ESRI and ArcGIS licensing will allow NCSO to utilize the mapping features in the Motorola Flex software, as well as, the body worn cameras that will help members of the agency, including dispatch, to know exactly where the deputies are based on their geolocation from vehicles, radios, and body worn cameras.
