Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $150,000)

Livingston County will use FY24 Byrne Discretionary Community Projects funding to purchase a law enforcement training simulator for scenario-based real world training. A training simulator places an officer in many diverse scenarios ranging from high stress critical incidents that employ force options to community engagement scenarios helping disabled persons, medical emergencies and mental health/substance abuse individuals. Having the ability to train and prepare for these incidents long before the officer is faced with a similar situation in real life is crucial to mental preparedness. This preparation allows an officer to think through the process of de-escalation, less lethal options or engagement of other community services.

The simulator incorporates training scenarios that involve people in mental health crisis, people under the influence of various substances, physically and mentally disabled people or any combination thereof. This training allows officers to prevent an issue rather than react to an issue.
