Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $1,701,000)
Fairmont State University, a regional public institution of higher education located in North Central West Virginia, requested Congressionally Directed Spending to support upgrades to the secure access systems in its residence halls and one of its academic buildings. The primary activities of this project will be to expand the existing CCure card access system to include additional interior doors within four of its five residence halls: Pence Hall, Prichard Hall, Bryant Place, and University Terrace, as well as in one of its academic buildings: the Engineering Technology Building. Expected outcomes of these upgrades include reductions in crime on and around campus, in accidental lockouts, and in long-term maintenance costs for the University. These outcomes will make the affected buildings safer, more efficient, and more convenient for students, allowing them to focus on their educational and career goals in a secure environment. This, in turn, will lead to increased satisfaction and aid in recruitment and retention.
The project’s service area will be Fairmont State’s campus, and its primary intended beneficiaries are the students, faculty, and staff. Campus safety is vital for a productive living, learning, and working environment. The project’s effects are expected to extend to the broader Fairmont community, as citizens of surrounding locations will also benefit from a greater sense of security and a reduction of crime in the area.
