Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $153,000)

The Utica Police Department is looking to upgrade its current police camera system.  Body-cameras, in-car camera systems, and fixed pole mounted automatic license plate reader cameras (ALPR) have proven themselves to be worthwhile law enforcement tools.  Body cameras and in-car cameras help ensure transparency and accountability for the public.  Body cameras provide an objective look at an officer’s interactions with the public, ensuring protection of both the public and the officer.

Fixed pole mounted ALPR technology provides invaluable investigative leads to reduce crime, assist in amber / silver alerts, and proactively alert officers to wanted suspected vehicles.  ALPR fixed cameras are connected to a nationwide network that affords an agency limitless investigative options and opportunities to help solve crimes that otherwise would not be possible.

Currently the department only has five working body cameras and an incompatible in-car system from another manufacturer.  The department will be expanding its body camera program providing cameras to every officer along with outfitting all patrol cars with an in-car camera system that seamlessly links together with the body cameras.  The in-car system will be equipped with ALPR technology and work alongside the pole mounted ALPR cameras increasing the benefit to the public.

The department will be adding four pole mounted ALPR cameras strategically located around the city.  These cameras will integrate with the in-car camera system along with being linked into the nationwide network which will benefit multiple local and regional agencies in locating vehicles of interest and solving crimes.
