Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $546,000)

Rowan County, NC will establish and implement the Rowan County Veterans Treatment Court (Rowan VTC) to address the specific needs of military veterans involved in the criminal justice system. Rowan VTC will provide an alternative to incarceration by offering comprehensive treatment and support services aimed at addressing underlying issues such as substance abuse, mental health disorders, and trauma. The goal is to rehabilitate veterans, reduce recidivism, and support justice-involved veterans' reintegration into society as productive citizens. We will address the specific needs of our veteran population by providing tailored support to reduce recidivism and address risk factors that may lead to re-incarceration. This specialized approach not only benefits the veterans themselves but also enhances public safety, reduces costs, and honors the service of those who have served in the military. As a specialized court program designed to address the unique needs of military veterans involved in the criminal justice system, Rowan VTC aims to divert veterans away from incarceration and into rehabilitative programs.
