Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $439,000)

West Virginia University Potomac State College (PSC), in Keyser, WV, proposes to implement the Security Equipment Enhancements initiative. The purpose of the initiative is to purchase and install state-of-the-art security cameras and integrated online locks for all entrance and exit doors in twelve campus buildings that are used daily (and nightly) by PSC students, employees, and campus guests.

This initiative will assist the University Police in investigating, responding to, and preventing crime. The technological upgrades will deter crime and will provide the University Police with modern tools to effectively address crime when it occurs and to prevent crime from happening thus improving the functioning of the criminal justice system.  Expected outcomes include a reduction in the number of unlocked doors on campus; a decrease in the number of thefts and burglaries; an increase in the number of crimes solved by University Police; and a greater sense of safety and security by members of the campus community.

This project will benefit the entire PSC community as cameras and online locks add two state-of-the-art and very effective layers of safety for students, employees (including the Police), and visitors to campus.
