Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $850,000)

The Peralta Community College District (PCCD) is comprised of four colleges – Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, and Laney and Merritt Colleges in Oakland, CA. Peralta Public Safety Services is responsible for protecting the lives and property of students, employees, and visitors. As community colleges strive to increase college completion and foster more equitable outcomes for students, they are charged with ensuring that all members of the campus community feel safe and welcome. Responding to these intersecting realities requires a new approach to campus safety and policing.  In response, PCCD proposes to develop and implement a proactive, holistic, and inclusive tiered safety and crisis response model. This effort will include three components: 1) Development and institutionalization of a districtwide campus safety plan, 2) Implementation of districtwide and intervention specific campus safety training, and 3) Development and piloting of an integrated curriculum bridging behavioral health and justice administration.
