The University of Charleston proposes to implement Campus Safety Upgrades. The purpose is to enhance the safety and security of students, faculty, staff and community members who participate in events and activities at the university’s locations in Charleston, WV and Beckley, WV. Project activities include upgrading campus technology network infrastructure to allow for updated electronic threat protection, a new card access system for student housing, a new emergency broadcast notification system, security cameras, a new campus security patrol vehicle with technology and safety features, and officer training on community policing. Expected outcomes include greater system-wide capacity for surveillance camera video capture, storage and telephone communications, electronic monitoring and notifications of security threats, and improved awareness of community policing, strengthening public trust. Students, employees and the communities served by the university in Charleston and Beckley West Virginia are the intended beneficiaries of the project.
