Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $1,500,000)

The City of East Lansing (population 49,000) faces unique public safety challenges due to its proximity to Michigan State University (MSU) with a large student population, bordering the state capital Lansing with critical infrastructure, and being a major transportation hub.

This project seeks grant funding to enhance public safety through three key initiatives:

Modular Vehicle Barriers: Replacing cumbersome concrete barricades with adaptable barriers to improve security during events and minimize pedestrian vulnerability.
Centralized Camera Surveillance: Implementing a central camera system to integrate existing cameras and enable real-time monitoring and post-event analysis, enhancing response capabilities.
Enhanced Security for Municipal Building and District Court: Addressing security vulnerabilities at City Hall and the 54B District Court, particularly critical with the upcoming election.

This project will improve public safety for residents, students, visitors, and government personnel by addressing security gaps during events, enhancing situational awareness, and securing critical government facilities.
