Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2024, $963,000)

The Illinois Kane County Coroner’s Office seeks to establish a forensic science center for Kane County, IL. This project is supported by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.  Kane County has a population of approximately 515,000 residents, which makes it the fifth most populated county out of 102 counties in Illinois.  Kane County must currently send forensic evidence and samples to other entities for testing, which is either cost-prohibitive or subject to lengthy backlogs.  For example, it is common for it to take up to three months for results from DUI kits and over one year to generate DNA profiles.  The main goals of this project are to i) rapidly generate leads in criminal investigations; ii) streamline the processing of obtaining information related to pending court cases; and iii) determine cause of death in a timely manner. We can achieve these goals by offering the following services: DNA profiling, postmortem and ante mortem toxicology, drug chemistry, blood alcohol content and gunshot residue analysis.  A county forensics lab could process results in hours instead of days and in days instead of months, which would benefit grieving families and law enforcement.
